A Nigerian who tried to smuggle cocaine into Ghana was sentenced to 10 years in prison

Ernest Nnajuiba Ukechukwu, a Nigerian citizen residing in Brazil, was found guilty of trying to smuggle a sizable amount of cocaine into Ghana.

Ukechukwu has been given a 10 year sentence that includes hard work.

At the Kotoka International Airport (KIA), the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) detained him as he tried to enter Ghana with the cocaine.

On December 11, 2022, NACOC agents detained Ukechukwu while he was going through KIA’s arrival procedures.

A thorough examination of his luggage was conducted as a result of his suspicious actions raising suspicions.

A astonishing 16,568.83 grammes of cocaine hidden in his stuff were found during the investigation.

He was detained after the finding and accused of six counts of narcotics charges involving the importation of drugs and unlawful possession after being charged.

Ukechukwu entered a plea of guilty to all counts during the High Court hearings in Accra. Mary Ekue Yanzuh, the presiding judge, then found him guilty based on his plea.

He was sentenced to a fine of 10,000 penalty units in addition to a 10-year term in jail. Three further years will be added to your sentence if you don’t pay the fee.

In the presence of the court registrar, state prosecutors, and the defence attorney on the day of the sentence, the exhibit of cocaine was destroyed in accordance with the court’s directive.
